In 1983, despite a late arrival the night before in Athens, somehow I made an early morning ferry to Santorini, walking through a sleeping Plaka, not considering whether my packed belongings made sense, carrying the heaviest bag all the way to the port. This was 20-year-old planning. No water or food. No clear idea of the destination. Only that I wanted to see Greece. This meant ferrying to some of the farthest islands.
After eight hours on the ferry, everyone seemed to exit and wander up the winding steep road to the youth hostel. I followed. Without a sleeping sheet, restlessness ensued. My belongings were alongside like a security blanket. Early the next morning – no communal shower for me- I left to find better accommodations.
With surprising ease I found a room overlooking the caldera. It was April, early season, and quiet. The ocean glimmered. The sky was deep blue. Although small with a bed and simple desk, the room was about the stunning view, right there, next to the pathway, overlooking from up high.
Sitting on the wall, looking out at possibility, being with myself, I felt confident about meeting others. Although sometimes it does not feel this way, we’re not alone in the world. My adventure had begun.
After decades away, next week I will travel again to the Greek Islands with IWorld of Travel, aboard their newest deluxe small ship, The Elysium. On this “Divine Cyclades” cruise, I will embark with “30 Perfect Strangers”.
