Our heart subtly, quietly aches. Travel isn’t always fun. Sometimes we go away to be with a sick family member or attend a funeral. Other times, even when we’re heading out for a fun adventure, leaving loved ones behind can be surprisingly difficult. The drive to the airport feels poignant, the luggage a little heavier. Despite managing last-minute minutia, we wonder what will happen at home when not there. While on solo retreat, will a loved one be alone too?
Although most likely not much will happen, it’s possible to bridge the gap of away time. As the world continues to spin and the news repeats itself, we can bring tenderness to our absence.
Here’s how:

Love the Yellow Sticky: Leave a note tacked to the refrigerator or in a place where it will not be missed. Write a few lines to emote love and laughter.

Make the Most of the Goodbye: A farewell should be memorable! Don’t underestimate The Hug. Make contact with extra kindness in your eyes. Express specifically what you wish for them while you’re way.

Power the Pillow: Place a Sweet Dream wish of some kind on the pillow. Perhaps fold new PJ’s on top or a stuffed animal. Beaux Reves!

Spread positive “JuJu”: It’s always possible to send good thoughts via your mind to loved ones. Some people use prayer for this. Throughout the day you can be anywhere and take a moment to wish someone well, good health, safety and peace.

Leave it: Even in the day of cell phones, it’s always assuring to leave contact and location details. Some times cell connections don’t work.
With a little thought and advanced planning, we can still “be there”, without actually being present. And besides, how fun to create a few simple surprises! John Denver had it right when he wrote:
“So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you’ll wait for me
Hold me like you’ll never let me go
‘Cause I’m leavin’ on a jet plane
Don’t know when I’ll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go.”
