Gondolas and chairlifts are cozy places. They’re more than a means of transport. Riding to the top of the mountain offers time for conversation. A few weeks ago while on the gondola, my husband and I met two Spaniards, an uncle and nephew. They were visiting the Wild West to experience cowboys and wide-open slopes, a long-time dream. Inspired, we invited them to ski with us.
It was a snowy day with abundant flakes and little visibility. We headed to the far reaches of a trail, with our special guests between us, blindly and carefully winding around a few peaks.
Our destination was a trial called Seldom. Staying close for safety, we started down, hollering into the storm. Our skills equaled the challenge. We made it safely to the bottom. Happy conversation ensued over beers and we hatched a plan to ski on Monday morning.
Under a stunning blue sky, we skied together on untracked sparkling snow. The wide-open vistas awed us. We screamed with joy. At the bottom, almost too overwhelmed to speak, we hugged and smiled. The happy experience would be edged in our minds forever. Our shared love of skiing bonded us together
Please join us…it was a simple ask. The Spaniards trusted our intent and sincere enthusiasm for Colorado skiing. As hosts, we felt confident in our abilities to act as guides. How risky could it be? Perhaps it was a little risky not knowing if their abilities would match their aspirations. Inviting others in to share an experience, however, was not risky. Our instincts to connect in a meaningful way guided our actions.
Most of us yearn to feel connected to others. And, in fact, it doesn’t take much to offer a little hospitality as a friend, acquaintance or citizen. The rewards outweigh any apprehension of inviting someone new into an experience.
While we won’t necessarily “mesh” with every person we meet, it’s always possible to offer a kind word or gesture. Kindness is the invitation! Offering hospitality forges a common bond near and far, wherever we’re “travelling”.
At A Table In Time, we start with the hospitality needed to invite others into conversation. When traveling we often experience the kindness of strangers along the way. Globe Getaways helps us plan the journey!
When an opportunity arises in daily life or when away from home, share the joy, share the good. Take a risk and reach out to others. After all, kindness is “Seldom” without reward.
