New England winters can be treacherous! Nor’easters bring astounding amounts of snow, especially to the Boston area, fueled by ocean air and low barometric pressure. Fierce winds batter shutters and houses creak!

About ten years ago my family and I experienced a ferocious winter in Hingham, MA. At first, it seemed that everyone was a recluse. In fact, the opposite was true.

Neighbors and friends sought each other out. We gathered in front of fireplaces, around the table eating hearty New England chowder, on a sledding toboggan or in the local pub, The Snug. We cooked stews and drank hot chocolate topped with lots of whipped cream.

Hingham citizens made the effort to connect and, therefore, we enjoyed much conversation. It was the secret to happily weathering the long, dark winter days.

To “weather” a challenging December, reach out to others. Dampen reclusive tendencies and, instead, invite friends, family, acquaintances and strangers into a friendly world of daily conversation.Devouring New England Clam Chowder might be the ticket! Here are a few “fishy” questions:

  • What kind of fish do you like to eat?
  • Do you serve any fish during the holiday season? If so, how is it prepared?
  • What’s your favorite winter activity? Ice-fishing?

Happy Conversing!
