Often we become caught up in meal preparations, a “fancy” table, and too many logistics. We let a busy corporate culture dissuade us from creating meaningful social time with co-workers. For some, organizing details derails us and we postpone entertaining all together. For others, we don’t extend an invitation because hosting appears cost prohibitive or is not included in a department’s budget. Caught up in minutia, we lose track of a gathering’s purpose: to deeply connect with one another.

When the intention is clear, important event details fall into place.  Further, we have “what it takes” to entertain others and then some! As thoughtful hosts we’re able to provide gifts that don’t cost a penny! Our gifts include:

  1. Strong Listening: when we listen well and observe we’re able to ear-pixabay copyfacilitate memorable conversation. Instead of the need to talk, we relax and ask questions to elicit guests’ stories. Who doesn’t enjoy feeling heard?
  2. A Warm Welcome: whole-heartedly greeting each guest at the door makes participants feel comfortable and included right from the start.
  3. Introductions: helping guests meet each other before sitting down at the table creates ease.
  4. Acknowledgement: sincerely recognizing each person at the table through a “Welcome” toast, blessing, “preamble”, whatever you’d like to call it, generates goodwill.
  5. Conversation Starters: posing a question and asking for answers, lets some guests have a brief spotlight. Those that don’t wish to speak will still enjoy hearing the responses. Even asking someone what he/she had for breakfast can be enlightening!
  6. Improved Relationships: conversation leads to new friendships, perspectives, laughter and “ah- ha” moments. Sharing food and stories strengthens our relationships.
  7. Honoring with Toasts: Expressing gratitude at the end of the evening engenders “warm and fuzzy” guest appreciation.Toaster wikipedia copy
  8. Meaningful Goodbye: Walking guests to the door and thanking them for coming will fondly be remembered.

It’s such a privilege to invite guests to the table.  Connecting through conversation with co-workers, friends, acquaintances, and those we’re meeting for the first time increases joy in the world, out-weighing the fanciest of menus. Don’t get me wrong: I relish a delicious meal. Yet, I cherish the memories of laughter and conversation more.
