More than once, A Table In Time dinner guests have commented that they’re unsure how to pick engaging conversation topics for their gatherings. Although this list only scratches the surface, here’s “what we might talk about” in January!
New beginnings– it’s not too late to make some adjustments to how you want to live your life. Start small. Five minutes of meditation is just fine, for example. Drive a new route to work. Determine what you need to feel happy about life, relishing the days, regardless of work demands. There’s always a new day, a new beginning. Questions for the table:
- What does a “New Year Resolution” mean to you?
- What might you start again?
- How might you bring in something “New” this year? What might it be?
Quiet
Snow brings a hush to our world. Cold crisp weather and a clear starry night inspire wonder. The embers burning in a warm fireplace calm our bodies. Take advantage of these spacious moments. Questions for the table:
- What brings peace and quiet to your daily life? Share a ritual, process, idea etc…
- Are you an introvert or extrovert? Explain what fuels your energy.
- What sounds represent silence?
Health
Colds love to ravage classrooms, homes and work places. Perhaps we suffer winter colds because our bodies are fighting just to stay warm. Yet, with winter comes dormancy, a season for indoor activities and yummy stews. Questions for the table:
- How might we boost health during winter?
- What are your favorite healthy warm drinks? Soups? Stews?
- Genetics aside, what are the keys to good health?
The Season
Sledding on a tabongon over a manmade snow jump and landing in a great big pile is fun! Drinking hot chocolate topped with home-made Schlagsahne, aka whipped cream, tastes delicious. Skiing after a fresh Colorado snowfall brings great joy! Questions for the table:
- What makes you happy during the winter? What do you dislike about winter? Don’t fret! Here are some favorite hot chocolate recipes!
- Where might your travel in the winter to appreciate the season?
- Tis the season for….do you have any winter traditions?
Iowa Caucus
Although not included in this list because the Iowa Caucus is on February 1st, please note that political topics are welcome at the table if we can bring our best selves to the conversation. This means we deeply listen, open to new perspectives, versus responding purely with our own agenda. It’s not easy sometimes to disagree. Remember not to take differences personally and read up on what this caucus is all about!
Celebration
Celebrate time together with family and friends on a daily basis. Weeknight dinners provide a perfect time for connecting and reflecting. Go around the table and provide each person a moment to share about their day, without interruption. Ask family members to set the table and help with the cooking, serving, clearing and cleanup. “Turn on” our ears to the conversation that accompanies the meal and celebrate the month of January.
