In some ways I think our dogs, Louis and Toulouse, enjoy Quinn gatherings more than we do and even perhaps more than our guests! They wander among everyone, sniffing and eying appetizers, thrilled to be underfoot. They sit inconveniently among us and sometimes attempt to climb onto the couch. They lie right in the middle of the room so as not to miss a moment. Our labradoodle and Standard Poodle are 100 percent present!
Hosting is about “being present” and less about the details that bog us down. We want to be like the dog wagging his tail, so happy to be with the guests, reveling in the interactions and yummy meal.
Here are some ways to “be present” as a host:
- Prepare ahead!!! Really take care of as many details as possible. Everything!
- Choose dishes that can be “ready to serve” such as stews, one-dish baked dishes, hearty soups, “pulled” meat
- Set-up the bar so guests can help themselves
- Light candles, pour water into glasses etc…
- Ask for help- if you must dodge away from the table, bring a guest or two with you
- Consider “who sits next to who” before the evening, one less task demanding attention
- Plate the dessert and salad
- Set up the coffee pot and a tray with the cups and saucers and after dinner drinks.
Once guests arrive, relax and breathe. Again, relax and breathe. What’s the worst that can happen? Nothing of any consequence!
As the gathering proceeds, envision your arms around the whole group, embracing each guest with your hospitality. If you’ve tended to the details ahead, it will be easier to fully enjoy the moments at hand.
Wag your tail and be happy!
