A healthy thought-out menu, one prepared ahead, let’s a host enjoy the guests and be fully present during the meal…no slaving over the stove with guests watching and waiting for your attention!   Asking guests to contribute to the meal is also a helpful option. Tonight I’m bringing some asparagus wrapped in puff pastry, baked and topped with salt and pepper and parmesan cheese, to a staff party. The recipe is from one of my favorite cookbooks, The Forest Feast by Erin Gleesen.

Included in my new e-book, A Table In Time: Host a Gathering for the Mind, Body and Soul, are some suggested menus, invitation copy and timelines for enabling memorable conversation around the table.  I hope you’ll add the “how to” guide for enabling conversation and hosting to your collection.

Tonight is a staff party for my teaching job.  In addition to bringing an appetizer I’m been reflecting on what questions I might ask my fellow teachers. Usually we’re so busy in the classroom and planning lessons that’s there’s little time to get to know one another. Tonight I’ll have an opportunity! I might ask:

  • What did you have for breakfast?
  • What do you enjoy most about the holidays?
  • Do you have any favorite dishes?
  • What traditions do you enjoy most?
  • Do you have a favorite childhood memory?  Around Santa Claus?
  • Do you believe in Santa Clause?

Happy Holidays!  Happy Conversation!
