Instead of “Bloody Hell” or “Darn It!“, Slovenians say “Three hundred hairy bears!“. Now that’s mellow! We know more about a people and culture when we speak their language. According to Rick Steve’s Croatia and Slovenia guidebook, the “worst Slovenians can say in their native tongue is, ‘May you be kicked by a hen’.” Hmmm, we didn’t know that hens can use their skinny legs in this way. Please take me to Slovenia to meet these polite people!

Although it’s estimated  that 7,117 languages are spoken around the world, only twenty-three are used by more than half of the world’s population (according to Ethnologue). Languages are constantly in flux, fragile, susceptible to change. Having a few phrases at the ready, especially “Thank You” and “Hello”, create an instant connection with someone speaking a different language. Everyone appreciates respect of social norms even in the most far away places where language is especially at risk.

Sometimes words might fail us and it’s kindness and action that’s required. In New York City last week we came upon people in need, one struggling to find the hospital, disoriented, walking in the wrong direction, and the other, carrying a child on her back, pulling a heavy cooler, on the way to Central Park, hoping to sell water for a few extra dollars. A smile, warm heart and helping with the task at hand spoke more than words. Even if we don’t understand any foreign language we can still show up as a loving human. Awareness, Courage and Love- it’s what binds us together.

Why were we researching Slovenia? We’re curating a Private Yacht Charter to Croatia in 2024 and a pre- or post trip to Slovenia would be a wonderful Add-On. Submit an “I’m Interested” form to be added to our travel community outreach HERE.
